I've had Wildblue for several years. I gave up trying to get DSL or cable and have been reading the forums dealing with EVDO. After seeing many people were pleased with it, I decided to get it.
Millenicom appeared to be the only EVDO ISP without a data cap and no contract. They appeared to be the best bet. Pre sales info on their website is limited. You have to go through the process of ordering service before you'll read all the info you need. I had to call them after I ordered service to find out what device they were sending me. Just as they've been saying in the Sprint forum, Millenicom is now switching to Verizon towers so they sent me a UM175. Per advice given in some forums, I also ordered the Cradlepoint MBR-1000 router. Both arrived three days later.
Install couldn't be easier. I plugged the UM175 into the router and connected the router to my network. I was instantly online, no configuration needed on my part. I was getting 94-120 ping so webpages were coming up so much quicker compared to WB. Speed tests weren't too great an varied a lot. I hit 1MB down one time.
Since then service has been fluctuating wildly. I've seen speeds as low as dialup and pings up to 3000 ms with 75% packet loss. Sometimes rebooting the router helps. Yesterday I installed the VZ manager software and used my laptop to check things out. Service from the laptop is the same as from the router. I have an old grid antenna that I will try to use to bring the signal in better. Hopefully that helps, but looking at some other reviews, it looks like other people are having the same problems once they were switched from Sprint to Verizon. Since I've already cancelled WB, I've got to make this work. I don't blame Millenicom since they are simply a reseller. It appears Verizon needs to fix this issue.
