My parents just got us hooked up with a new ISP called Ottawa South Highspeed.

its absolutely insane! im getting like 16mb/s download AND upload! our other two companies (rogers and bell) were absolutely terrible, then my dad found one of the pamphlets and gave it a shot. best thing we ever did internet wise...Ive never had such consistent and fast internet in my LIFE, if you use msn or facebook or torrents or youtube and live in this area you would be crazy not to try OSH.

TP-Link TD-8841 MoDem - Exploration & Discoveries Part 2

The present thread is meant to complete this one:

TP-Link TD-8841 Modem -- Exploration and Discoveries, Planiwa, 2009-May-14

It seems like we now have a TelNet CLI manual...

Zhone Technologies, Inc. Zhone 6211-I1-200ADSL2+ BroadCom-Based CPE Router (a CLI clone):

Zhone 6211-I1 ADSL2+ Router Command Line Interface User's Guide

...and more...

Zhone 6211-I1 ADSL2+ Router User's Guide

Which also appears to be quite similar to this:

How to make your CIA/3Web Internet become 10mbps/1mbps

Ok, folks before I continue I only know how to do this only when you have their Internet + VoIP combo. I have both. But my speeds suck.

I don't have anything being downloaded or uploaded. Currently in my system tray there are

KIS 2010 (not being updated)
FastStone Capture
MeGUI (not being updated)

I checked my "Task Manager" and there's nothing I know that consumes a lot of bandwidth/speed. The other computers on the network are shutdown so they can't be using the speed.

My network path

But if I do a factory reset to the SPA2102 VoIP modem using the phone which will erase the dial tone but you will get full or more speed than you did before. See this, I did this test the time I didn't have my dial tone.

My speed without dial tone

The speed is better but I don't have a live home phone anymore. That's the only down part right now but I would really appreciate any help regarding this problem. I want to have dial tone this speed above.

EDIT: If you are wondering why my test servers aren't same, that's because when I had dial tone in the phone the "Hamilton" server didn't come up as "Recommended" but came up as "Recommended" when I didn't have the dial tone. By the way, I tested all the yellow servers on speedtest.net to make sure I pick the best speed I could get.

CPP now owns a big chunk of Skype ...watchout Bell

The deal to sell 70% of Skype closed today, for about $1.9 Billion USD.

Canada Pension Investment Board (known to most of us as the CPP deductions on our paycheques) and its partners now own 56% of Skype - with Ebay retaining 30% ownership, and Skype's founders taking back a 14% stake.

Since the CPP has a big stake in this and a responsibility to all Canadians (not just telco shareholders), do you think they'd want to more aggressively promote the use of inexpensive Skype services in Canada at the expense of Bell & Telus?

Here's hoping.

Downtown Vancouver fiber costs

It's been a while since I've been shopping for bandwidth in Vancouver - before getting anything more than a DSL line was insanely expensive.

Here's the scoop, I'm 2 blocks from harbour center, I'm pretty sure there's fiber outside the building if not inside already. I'm just wondering roughly what my cost would be to light it up instead of using a DSL line for the building.

Any ideas... ballpark figures are fine...

Question for DSL Co CEO's - Competition Bureau do u use it?

Have you guys leveraged this agency yet?

For years of working in the PC business I found it a very powerful deterrent to stop FutureShop from running false promos.

Bell has done numerous anti-competitive measures in this industry. Have any of you filed formal complaints with them?

I can tell you I've had some discussions with them and they're certainly have Bell on their Radar for other reasons. They claim no one is coming forward from the industry and actually filing any complaints.

TPIA review by Electronic Box

Since the old thread is getting a bit old, here is a fresh new one for us to follow up during next weeks on what will happen with the TPIA file.

http://jp.electronicbox.net/electronicbox/tpia20091019.pdf

We basically ask 4 things:

1) Give fair rates for localoop on all speed-tier
2) Moderate fees charges in overusage
3) Business Edition package (unlimited internet) to have corresponding TPIA rates since they are currently offering in residential market
4) Introduction of payment options for installation fees so that the 100$ install fee of cable local loop will be amortized

Bell/Rogers/Telus - Foreign ownership worries!

Hi all,

I'm curious as to how Bell, Rogers and Telus are allowed to operate based on current foreign ownership rules?

Since all three are publicly traded companies, it is possible for any foreign entity or person to take a controlling ownership of all three by simply purchasing sufficient shares.

Does this not lead to the exact same issue as a company that is already foreignly owned (cough cough CRTC). In fact public listing is even worse, because at least if its privately controlled CRTC can review the owners actual intentions. With a publicly traded company if a nation-state decides to harm us they only need enough money to purchase (circa Iran Contra affair) said companies and voila! you control all our media!

Note to CRTC: Repeal foreign ownership or cut off these companies. Either will make me smile.
