[connectivity] Upgrade to 7MB Service - Keeps Dropping!

We just upgraded from 3mb to 7mb DSL service. Verizon shipped us a new Westell 7500 modem. Everything started out well. However, at least 2-3 times a day the connection drops. The DSL light on the modem stays lit but the Internet light goes out. I have called VZ tech support at least 5 times. The last tech said our line is "saturated" and our distance from the CO is 3600 feet - outside the limit of 3000 feet for 7mb service?

I see other posts where people post their "stats" and other people review them. How do I gather these stats and can someone comment?

Thx

issue tracert/connecting to safer-networking.org?

Hello all,

Having an issue connecting w/ Verizon DSL to Spybot's site for updates, www.safer-networking.org -- tracert is as follows:

Tracing route to www.safer-networking.org [89.238.64.39]
over a maximum of 30 hops:

  1 1 ms 1 ms 1 ms dslrouter [192.168.1.1]
  2 27 ms 27 ms 27 ms 10.30.6.1
  3 * * * Request timed out.
  4 * * * Request timed out.
  5 * * * Request timed out.

All other sites seem to be working fine though, i.e. Google tracert's through the timed out hop fine:

Tracing route to www.l.google.com [64.233.169.147]
over a maximum of 30 hops:

  1 * 1 ms 1 ms dslrouter [192.168.1.1]
  2 27 ms 26 ms 26 ms 10.30.6.1

  7 33 ms 33 ms 37 ms te-11-0-0.edge1.Washington4.level3.net [4.68.111

Anyone have any ideas? Not sure why just this one site would be showing as not connecting through the hops.

Thanks for any input.

Need help setting up Westell 6100G modem...

Hi all,

I have been having Verizon DSL in the Los Angeles area for about 4 years. The DSL modem is an old Westell Wirespeed. It has been working fine in the last 4 years, may be except a few times when the line had problem.

Last week, the line became flaky again and they just sent me a new Westell 6100G and I'd appreciate any help you could give.

- I have a Netgear wired/wireless router connected to my old modem and it works fine with my old modem. My Verizon DSL doesn't require log in with username/password. I didn't have to do any setup with my old modem. I just plugged it in and it worked. My router uses 192.168.0.1 subnet (does it matter?)

- when I replaced my old modem with the new 6100G in its place, I had no connection. The INTERNET light was red. What is this INTERNET light? (my old modem has 3 LEDs: POWER, READY (when connected to the wall) and ETHERNET (when connected to router))

- with the new modem, when I connected my computer directly to the modem, my computer was assignment an IP of 192.168.1.42. The INTERNET light was RED.

- I connected to 192.168.1.1 and logged in with admin/password and got to the menus but I am not sure what I need to change? I already disabled the "Walled Garden" as suggested here.

- What exactly do the 3 LED lights mean? (DSL/DATA/INTERNET)

- I would appreciate your comments/helps/suggestions.
Thank you very much.

[modem/router] Unable to browse some sites with bridged linksys

I am having a problem I cannot seem to solve. I have a Linksys WRT55AG bridged to a Westell 6100G. First, my connection appears to be painfully slow. Second, I am unable to browse many sites. Examples include Yahoo!, Facebook, banking sites and in particular sites which require login information such as email and even verizon.com.

I can successfully ping many of these sites (tried recently with auth.verizon.com) but cannot seem to resolve this issue.

I am a little savvy, but could really use some direction here before I lose what is left of my hair.

Thanks.

[modem/router] access modem menus from router?

HI all,

I just got a new Westell 6100G to replace an old Westell Wirespeed modem. By following the FAQ here, I was able to set it to 'bridge' and put it between the wall jack and my Netgear WGR614 router and it worked. However, I couldn't access the modem's menus at 192.168.1.1 to get the status.

My Netgear was set to DHCP for LAN, subnet 192.168.0.x and the modem's ip is 192.168.1.1 (DHCP disabled).

I read the link http://www.dslreports.com/forum/r17864504-modemrouter-how-to-access-cp-through-router of using 2 eNet cables to connect the modem to the router in order to access the modem menus. But what I don't understand is why do I need to do this? Shouldn't the netgear forward all packets that are not for its subnet (192.168.0.x) to the WAN side and therefore reaching the modem (at 192.168.1.1)?

(if I connect the modem directly to my computer using Enet, then set my computer to 192.168.1.2, I was able to connect to the modem.)

Thanks.

[connectivity] Verizon Connection Dropping for Months

So about two months ago or so Verizon went down for some sort of maintenance and when they came back up our speed and connectivity has never been the same. In the beginning, it was only our speed, but now we find ourselves losing connection constantly. We've talked to techs, had them remote to my laptop, had one out here, replaced the router and the lines, nothing has worked. Current router is the 7500 Westell. Any help would be very appreciated!! I REALLY don't want to move to comcast.

[speed/latency] difference in single download and multiple downl

I have verizon dsl 3M since 2005 or 6, and since the day one of service, my (single file) download speed never exceeded 180k, however when I download multiple files at the same time, the total speed sums up to be anywhere between 250 to 280k. Could somebody with expertise in this regard explain this phenomenon, which of course is not desirable? any remedy? TIA

DSL keeps disconnecting when phone rings

Hello everyone. I have been having this problem for the past month and it is just getting really frustrated. I bought a new actiontec modem from verizon and installed it. Verizon guided me through a part, since I was installing a router (Netgear router) with the modem. Also I wanted to make it clear that the problem even persisted with the old modem, so I know for sure it is not the new modem. I contacted Verizon tech support and had a guy come over to look at my phone lines, since I was getting a lot of static on my lines. The tech installed a filter at the NID box and the hissing is gone, but my dsl still disconnects once in a while. Also, sometimes the phone line goes out in the middle of the night. No dial tone or anything. Everything is fine with the filters, the NID has a filter as well and the modem and router are working fine. The only thing that I haven't checked is the phone jacks. The tech told me something that caught my attention, he said that if the phone jack has received water damage that it can cause problems with the line and the internet even with the filters, so my only option now is to change the phone jacks, I believe I know which one might be the culprit, but I wanted to ask if there is anything else that I should look at? Any help would be very much appreciated.

[modem/router] Router showing devices not connected to my networ

I recently got an Actiontec GT704-WGB wireless modem/router from a buddy of mine as he had two and the wireless router I had was no longer working.

I hooked it up and everything is working fine, but the only thing is it's still showing his two devices as being connected (a computer by ethernet and an Xbox 360 by wireless). Since I don't have any wireless devices at the moment, I turned the wireless off but the modem is still showing the Xbox as being connected. I then tried resetting the router, both by using the software reset and also doing a hard reset on the equipment, but nothing I do seems to clear out those two items, and they're still showing as being a part of my network.

While it doesn't seem to be causing any problems at the moment, I'd like to try getting these cleared out if I can. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Does Verizon really care anymore?

I think I am one of many Verizon customers who are now having the problem of their DSL speed slowing down each evening (I‘m paying for 3.0 MB/sec and am getting readings below 1.0 after 8 pm). I’ve had technicians out to my house twice now and all they can say is that additional equipment must be installed at their central station to solve the problem, but the Verizon decision makers are unwilling to do it. FiOS is not available in my area (Northridge, CA) and will not be for years.

I intend to drop Verizon DSL service shortly because of this, but what is most frustrating to me is the daily deluge of TV commercials advertising FiOS service that must cost Verizon millions, but yet they refuse to install the needed equipment at their central station that would cost near to nothing compared to what they’re paying for their TV time every day. It seems to show they just don’t give a rip anymore about DSL customers anymore, and us plain DSL clients no longer matter.
