Mediacom Launches DOCSIS 3.0 In Nine More Markets

Mediacom Launches DOCSIS 3.0 In Nine More Markets
Offers 50-Mbps Service In Parts Of Iowa, Illinois, Missouri, Florida, Minnesota
By Todd Spangler -- Multichannel News, 1/27/2010 11:23:45 AM
Mediacom Communications has expanded its DOCSIS 3.0 rollout to nine additional markets, reaching just over 25% of its subscriber base with a 50-Mbps downstream service, on the heels of the operator's 105-Mbps service launch in two small communities.

"It's a great competitive edge and an opportunity for Mediacom to have the best connection in a given market," said Dan Templin, group vice president of strategic marketing and product development.

The operator last month launched the Ultra 105 tier -- at 105 Mbps down and 10 Mbps up, billed as the fastest residential broadband in the United States -- in Waterloo, Iowa, and Dagsboro, Del., priced for first 12 months at $149.95 per month.

Since then, Mediacom's Ultra 50 tier (50 Mbps down and 5 Mbps up) has been launched in Waterloo and Dagsboro and nine additional markets: Charleston and Moline, Ill.; Cedar Rapids and Iowa City, Iowa; Mound, Minn.; Gulf Breeze and Milton, Fla.; and Columbia and Springfield, Mo. Pricing for the first 12 months is $99.95 per month.

In total, the Ultra 50 service is available to approximately 25% of Mediacom's existing high-speed Internet subs, meaning about 191,000 out its 765,000 broadband customers would be able to upgrade to Ultra.

In 2010, Mediacom expects to bring DOCSIS 3.0 to another 25% of its footprint to be able to offer 50-Mbps service to roughly half its customers, Templin said. In addition, the MSO in March plans to introduce a 50-Mbps service for business customers, Mediacom's first commercial offering.

"With some pretty smart investment in our network we have the capacity to be a market leader with the DOCSIS 3.0 technology," Templin said. "We're showing that Middle America doesn't have to be trailing larger urban markets."

Mediacom is using Cisco Systems' DOCSIS 3.0-compliant cable modem termination system (CMTS) and cable modem equipment.

The challenge for cable operator at this point, according to Templin, is finding wireless routers capable of handling download speeds greater than 50 Mbps. "The CE manufacturers haven't kept pace with this generation of speeds," he said. "The gating factor is the consumer's equipment and their devices."

[IL] Outage within first 12 hours of service?

First, im no newbie to internet, DSL or cable. I have a gigabit home network and my 4 kids are constantly on the network and internet. I previously had Comcast at my old house but since my move I was originally stuck with DSL (3mb) from Verizon.

I have had DSL for 2-3 years now and frequently maxed out my bandwidth which is what made me call Mediacom. I was excited to have them come out within 24 hours of my call to install the service, I hooked it into my router and everything worked perfectly. A speed test showed 11.5 down and .9 up. I was very happy.

However, sometime around midnight my modem stopped responding and refused to reconnect. The Receive goes solid, Send just keeps blinking.

I started reading a lot in here about MCHSI issues, have I made a grave mistake in trying to get some additional bandwidth? In the 2 years I had DSL I had one outage, ever. Am I in for trouble? Should I just revert back to DSL? I do a lot of file transfers from my webserver so I really wanted the addtional speed.

I'm putting a call into MCHSI today but seriously? 12 hours to my first outage? Is that normal?

[MN] Connection Issue - Intermittent

First time poster, so bear with me a bit here.

My problem is that my general internet connection with Mediacom intermittently drops. Sometimes it will go for weeks without issue, then some weeks will lose my connection 3-4 times a day for 1-5 minutes at a time. During the connection drop, I can still access my router (Linksys WRT160N) and (usually) my cable modem (Motorola SB5120 firmware SB5120-2.14.0.7-SCM00-NOSH). The connection drop is the same for all devices on the network (usually two laptops and occasionally a couple smartphones).

I am currently in a bad week, where my connection has been getting dropped 3-4 times a day.

As suggested in the forum header, I ran a short term smokeping 2 days ago that indicated periods of severe packet loss (for one 30 min period, it was 100%). I started a new smokeping today, and the old smokeping is still visible on the 10 day graph here:
http://www.dslreports.com/r3/smokeping.cgi?target=network.1d349f1eaa53d9602380c2f2c23ccc27.NY

I won't post a speed test or a line quality test, since these both seem to report that everything is fine, except during a disruption when they report nothing.

I have had this problem (off and on) for quite some time, maybe a year or more. I had a tech come out at least once, but it must have been a good day in a bad week, and he found no significant signal problems and just replaced the one splitter in my cable line. This obviously did not fix the problem.

I frequently use the connection for gaming and streaming video, so these drops are very disruptive. Hopefully, with the help of the some of the apparently higher level support on this forum, I could get this problem finally fixed. If there is something straightforward I have not tried, please let me know.

Slow internet

Anybody else is having slow internet problem in Ankeny, Iowa. We are supposed to have 12Mb but the last few days it fluctuates a lot and we are no where getting close to 11 or 12Mb. It goes from less than 1Mb to 7Mb/s usually. Tried to call Mediacom this morning and the lady said it's normal and wants to charge us $29 if she sends a tech out and take a look at the problem.

[IA] Mediacom Speeds

Maybe someone here can tell me why! So I like to play battlefield 2 Bad Company, but every evening my speeds slow down to around 3.33 Mb/S (I think I'm on the 12 Mb/s package). Let's call this the 4 p.m. to 12 midnight time frame. Then magically every night at exactly midnight (within the minute), my speeds crank up about to 9 - 11 Mb/s D/l speed. Doesn't happen every day, but about 50% of the time. Oh mediacom, how u chap me!!

[IA] this has GOT TO stop! NOW!!!

i pay my hard earned money as does everyone else here for the packages they want.
mine is the 20/2 MAX package...

and as many of you are experiencing today 3.20.10 and for months on end i too am barely even moving and can not even stream netflix.
SD movies yes, but HD movies no, it buffers, plays and then buffers again in a little bit, then plays... and then again and again and again.

my modem signal levels are also just crazy high... and have been since i fixed all the bad cables outside my house.
the signal is so strong now i MUST use a DC-6 splitter just to bring the power levels down to reasonable levels.

there is nothing wrong iwth my modem because at 2-3am speeds pick back up. and at various times during the day it might jump a little. but for the most part from 7am to 10pm (the times i might be ont he internet, this is what i get.

MediaCON you had better wake the frack up... do you possibly think that the local township's cable commissioner's have not just been flooded with complaints from users?
i have written 3 letters in the last month alone and made 4 phone calls to the CR cable commissioner.....
how many do you think others have made?!!

this is a picture BEFORE adding the DC-6 splitter

this is a picture AFTER adding the splitter

this is a speed test, or rather a download test to a dedicated server with a pipe connected to it that would max out even the highest of internet connections.

[IA] To MAX Customers: Average Speed?

Using Speedtest.Net over the last two weeks, I average 10.08 Mb/s down. Upload is 2.19 Mb/s.

If I am supposed to get 20 MB/s as a MAX customer, does my download speeds seem off base to you? I am particularly curious to know what other MAX customers see over a period of time on average.

I am using a Mediacom supplied SMC SMC8013WG router.

Thanks for any information.
