Re: Thomson SpeedTouch 5x6v6 FirmWare v6.2.H (v6.2.17.5)

so where is this v7.4.4.7-iA to download? I'll try it on my 516.. why not?

You need to read the thread backward by just
a few posts to get details about the present
topic... As for your ST516, i'm not sure if this
release will fit but i would bet that it does...

Hey guys,

Will any of these work in the US? I can't find anything on the Speedtouch that isn't Canadian or French. I'm on a Speedtouch 516v5

I don't see why not, i've used a UK
release without problems, after all.

You may need to edit 'user.ini' in
case the default VPI/VCI values are
different, though...

Ok, will it work on a v5 tho? And can you tell me what I would have to do to those values? I want to upgrade it cause I've been having tons of NAT problems trying to get my web server available to the internet.

Hi,

The last FirmWare update available for Thomson's
SpeedTouch 5x6v5 (BANT-J) is v6.1.0.5 so you'd
need to search for 'ZZTXAA6.105.bin' as this build
is suitable for your HardWare, see the release note:

Thanks guys, but after my network crashed and I reinstalled my server and swapped out my wireless it magically began to forward.

Hi Bicephale,

I still use 5.4.0.14 (I remember you recommended it in the past) on my 546v6. Is it worth upgrading to something newer? or should i take approach of 'if ain't broken do not fix it'?

TIA

Hi,

I liked version v5.4.0.14 in days when no tweak
worked for me and no other build seemed to meet
my expectations, i kept hoping the v7 releases
would be good enough until i moved to a distant
city where tweaking now works all the sudden...

The newer v7 FirmWares weren't helping when i
faced some severe noise issue so i climbed up the
tweaker's FirmWare spectrum which ends right at
v6.1.0.5, if we agree to ignore v6.1.4.6/v6.1.9.6
for practical purposes (these have nag traps to
make them 'DMT'-hostile)... If what you have is
satisfying and you require no tweaking abilities
then just stick to it and simply enjoy your luck!

I'm seeing quite a strange issue with my Dry loop (TekSavvy). The Downstream attenuation is 12.0dB, why the Upstream is 29.0dB (according to DMT), while TekSavvy keeps saying they are seeing 12.0/5.0dB accordingly. Is it possible that DSLAM is incorrectly set so we can see different results? Can it be fixed somehow?

Hi,

If i've read you correctly, you're saying there's no
problem with the DownStream SNR Margin, only the
UpStream one which is a mere 5 dB on your side, as
measured on your equipment, while your ISP using
Bell's "lantern" sees a very healty 29 dB! Hummm...

Well, for starters, it's practically impossible to obtain
perfectly synchronized readings (from both ends, at
the very same time) so one can't expect his MoDem
and its peer (a DSLAM, whatever they call it these
days) to agree on the same values constantly. As a
result, although it seems somewhat unlikely, we may
very well end up with a pair of readings generated
by independant marginal events of high but opposite
amplitudes. Perhaps your line happens to be unstable
and the local, remote or even both sets of readings
simply vary between extremes. Anyway, lets not talk
in absolutes here, i'm only suggesting that this could
be part of an explanation; i find difficult to put a 24
dB difference on the account of that alone, actually!

There's a problem with static numbers: they vary in
time and this opens the door to interpretation. Just
don't trust them in an absolute way, the equipment
may turn out to be buggy on one side or maybe both
(mild incompatibility is not impossible)... In any case,
i've demonstrated on a few occasions that such SNR
Margin numbers can prove to be quite poor in terms
of information. I won't even bet on a long-term SNR
Margin curve: these usually fail to give a hint about
what's going on, i'm afraid... at best, those numbers
are of some usefulness during the preliminary trouble-
shooting phase only! In short, two numbers as these
are hardly more significant than a good annecdote;
my advice is to collect more substancial evidence...

The only difference is that I'm seeing upstream attenuation of 29dB (which changes though with every reboot) at my modem (using DMT), while TekSavvy admins read 4dB on their end, which is strange, taking into account that other data is almost the same. Besides I'm seeing I'm on a Interleaved path, while Bell/TSI keep saying I'm on the Fast Path.

How to set VPI/VCI in v7.4.4.7 - didn't find it and feel a bit confused

I can't comment much further on such scarce/poor input.

About the VPI/VCI set, i'd take a good look at '/dl/user.*'.

Click for full size
Well, in previous version one could set VPI/VCI in the special screen during setup process and 0.35 is required by TekSavvy. This screen has gone in 7.4.4.7, instead you can select between "standard", "westend" and "k-net" - simply don't understnad what does it mean and to which values correspond...

I'd try copying 'ftp://x.x.x.x/dl/user.tpl' from
the setup that works to install it instead of
'ftp://x.x.x.x/dl/user.tpl' from the one which
doesn't or you can simply manually edit the
corresponding .INI configuration file as well.

To edit 'user.ini' just save it to disk, edit and
then restore.

What is x.x.x.x - modem's ip address like 192.168.1.254?

I hope these one click links will help, try one:

'ftp://dsldevice.lan/dl/user.tpl'
'ftp://speedtouch.lan/dl/user.tpl'
'ftp://10.0.0.138/dl/user.tpl'
'ftp://192.168.1.254/dl/user.tpl'

As i pointed out here, look for different defaults:

»Re: ST516 - Strange discovery

The .TPL ("Template") file controls how the Wizard behaves,
if you can't install one that works with the correct defaults
then try changing occurences of "8?35" to "0?35" in 'user.ini'.

By "?" i mean anything that fits between ("*", whatever)...
