Yes Pioneer,

NOW I have read your PM and replied. I thank you for your information.

I've been using 51143 prl for months and most times it works fine. Sometimes it hangs but not often. I am billed by Alltel not Verizon. I don't have any antenna or boosters just the UM 150 and it works fine. Our trees are almost full now so I am pleased I haven't seen the speeds drop.

Thanks Martha, Nice to know. you are getting good results. I went to an Alltel corporate store and they stated that they are still fine tuning the rev A around here. Supposedly it will get better soon. they said when EVDO was introduced, it took a month to get it right. We shall see. current as of 5/26/09

After lurking for a while, I decided to register to post this question...

I just borrowed an EC168A from Bottrell Wireless in Manistee, MI, to see if Alltel Rev A is fast enough to replace my annoying Hughesnet service. It appears not. I'm getting great pings and UL speeds, but DLs are .4 to .9 Mb/s. I might dump Hughesnet if DLs were 1.0 Mb/s or better, but...

It seems unlikely that signal strength is the problem. I have a 60 dB Wilson Electronics and Yagi aimed at the nearest Alltel tower, to support my Verizon cell phones. And Alltel's QLM program displays 4 bars and says its RSSI is -80 dBm. I called Alltel to ask why the DL speeds were so poor. They said the speeds I'm getting are good enough that they could not help me.

Might switching to the Verizon PRL help me? How do you switch an air card to a different PRL? Is there a thread here somewhere that explains this?

They blew you off like they have been doing now for a while. I would wait for a little while unless you want in under the unlimited plan with no cap that Alltel has now. Otherwise wait it out for the merger to be complete and go with Verizon. If you still have the card follow the instructions for changing a prl on here and put the Verizon 51345 on the card to see how it will do in your area.

I, too, was a Hughesnet customer and moved onto the Alltel system about a year ago. No, as of now, you won't get quite the download speeds of Hughesnet satellite. However, you really need to analyze the overwhelming benefits that come from a MUCH shorter latency and MUCH faster upload speeds that come with the Alltel system. Your browsing will be so much faster than you can ever experience with the satellite system! Besides, I was always concerned about the skimpy allowable download limits from Hughesnet and don't have to be concerned any longer with Alltel, at least until my contract is over with them. Verizon already has a cap on the amount you download so beware...

I need help too in Raleigh, NC. My boss, and he's a big Boss, has an ec168 alltel card and the connection keeps dropping and speed is slow. This started in January. I've had the card replaced and gave him a new laptop yesterday. I think the new hardware may have solved most of the problem but I would like to understand more about what this forum has talked about.
I need prl 101 - how do I check it, how do I change it, how do I figure out what prl is best for this area, the whole primer on prl.
I also have questions about the wifi part of this device. His machine is only using the broadband connection to alltel's network but is it possible that the wifi component is sensing wireless networks in his neighborhood and bumping the broadband when it tries to connect via wifi? Can the wifi be disabled without disabling the ec168 completely?
Be as condescending as you wanna be - I'm a newbie and my humility will allow it...just be nice.
Thanks.

There are two new prls right now that support rA 30041 and 40050 both do. I've heard of 41xxx prls out there as well. I can only get 40050 pushed to the card when I activate it, I had to manually download 30041 to use it.

I am not smart enough to know why we have two PRL's as pioneer56 has shown. I am going to try both to see what speeds are. 30041 was pushed to me last night by Alltel. For those that also want to try both here is a link where you can find them:

There is not question as of June 14, 2009 that verizon PRL are much faster than Alltel 30041 in the Cadillac, MI area. I sure hope this improves. At this point I would rather have two verizon accounts at twice the speed for twice the cost at a 10GB per month cap

Verizon has it's quirks, but sorry to say Alltel is pure CRAP!! I was testing tonight with 40050 and was only getting 250kb down and 200kb up terrible speeds for Rev A!

Since I went back to Alltel's prl 40050 I haven't had the hangups and disconnects I was having. The speed tests are a little slower but I am moving around the Net way more smoothly. I don't have any antenna just the card plugged into my destop.

Wow MarthaG, sure wish I had the speeds you are showing with Alltel. I am getting speeds like Pioneer56 showed or sometimes up to 700 down. Think Ill stay with verizon prl for a bit but check in for new alltel PRLs. Maybe the merge continuance will do something.

They HAVE to be working on something, as of late night June 15 both alltel PRLs have 200 down and 200 up with about 200 ping. Verizon PRL is even worse. UGH

You just can't get good Alltel speeds in Michigan no matter what you do, the entire state has a major flaw with the Rev A upgrade and Alltel won't admit to it no one in Michigan has been able to meet those speeds yet with Alltel's prls. But I am glad you are getting better speeds I am staying with the Verizon prl till it is fixed or we all sue them.

I wanted to let you all know that my speeds went down to nothing practically yesterday and so far this morning so I switched back to Verizons prl. It is down even using Verizon's prl. They must be doing something that is causing the slower speeds. Hopefully they will get it fixed soon.

I switched prls and did a couple of speed tests. It seems to be fixed now and there isn't much variation whether I am using 40050 or 51143.

Hey marthaG,

I have been gone for 1 1/2 days, as i went thru clare i thought of your posts and hoped things are improving. This weds night i tried again and both alltel speeds are so bad I wont report them. verizon prl was 1/2 of your reported speeds. I am almost to point of canceiling allel and getting two verizon contracts for a 10GB cap. Yea i can afford it. But I will wait until the merger is more complete before acting. For me Alltle sucks at this point

sailboattrip,

I hope your connection gets better. I have decided to stay with Verizon's prl and it has been fairly good since I started to use it. I could go and try Alltel's again but I am from the school if it ain't broke don't fix it. LOL!

Seriously I live about 5 miles from 3 towers. I didn't know until recently that two that were called Crown Communication are Verizon. One is Alltel. I had a poor connection until RevA became available. It still stalls sometimes but maybe that's my virus program checking to make sure it's ok. I am not very high tec at all but that's my thoughts. Good luck to you. Have you tried the prl that works for me? It's 51143.
