Issues get them to run a tap to the house?

Click for full size
We scheduled to have a 3 service bundle installed last Tuesday (9/29/09) Installer came out to do his job. He was worried about the distance from the street to our house, so he brought out a measuring device and walked the line. Turns out we need a tap (correct terminology?) ran closer to the house.

So its been a week later Ive called customer service and they put me on hold so she could call the plant manager? Turns out they have to build something? (cost $900?) and would take 35-40 days before completion. Does any of this sound right? And what takes 40 days to build that is comprised of stretching a cable between two poles and then attaching the new service tab at one end?

Any idea folks? Thanks

Over 200 feet is not a good thing. Give them time to extend their plant. A tap 75 feet from your house will work a whole lot better.
By the way "Help Suddenlink" Node 019 Lake Charles running at 85%. Makes it hard to post here. Please split my node. Thanks

Construction isn't usually handled locally, it is usually contracted out. Also, it's not simply a matter of extending an additional span of cable, adding a new span of cable in a new direction is like adding an additional outlet in your house, it can affect the signal of the existing cable/taps/customers. Additionally, if building a span to your house would mean disconnecting customers downline (even temporarily), the the project must be scheduled & approved, and typically would have to be done between 12am-6am (Don't want to take down other customers phone service in the event that someone needs 911)

The thing is there are only two customers in our neighborhood. So I don't see that being a problem. But 35-40 days?

When we called they said our address was serviceable, now all of a sudden we are not? Do they not look at properties, before they claim address's to be serviceable?

Seems like that run could be done with RG-11 cable. Yes it's a long run but definitely not impossible without doing a plant buildout. Might put an amp at one end though to make sure the signal goes all the way.

Assuming that is an 865 mhz plant, you could make 4 tv's and the internet work pretty well with an rg'11 drop. Anymore than that and you'd need an amplifier for your tv's. You don't want to amplify the internet.

It is something that you would have to get them to install. If i was you i would call customer service again. Ask them if you could get an rg-11 drop and tell them you would be willing to pay for one of their amplifiers for your tv's. If they won't do that ask them if they can build the plant out 75 feet. ( They are charging you a little over 4 dollars a foot by the numbers your giving ). At least that way it's not going to cost you 900 bucks. They probably have a 200' limit for servicability. So if they built out 75' that would put you within range .
The bottom line is they don't want to provide you with service unless it's going to be good quality. Perhaps if you talk to them about one of these other options they might be willing to do it.

Another thing I forgot to mention, Is we are getting HDTV/DVR, 8mb Internet, and there Phone.

Would the booster affect the HDtv?

The internet and the phone can all be handled on the same outlet. You can just have them tie into the phone jack in the same room you want your internet service. They have one unit that can handle both services. Worse case scenario they have to install a phone line in the room where the internet is at if one isn't close by or vice versa. No it won't affect your HDTV signal, the great and bad thing about digital signals is that they either work or they don't. So it will either look great or it will start tiling ( look like a bunch of little broken up blocks ) or you'll just lose the picture. A digital signal is a digital signal they both have the same operating ranges so if one works so should the other.

Lets not get our hopes up too much. Most Suddenlink systems won't let their installers run a rg-6 drop longer than 200 feet. Or a rg-11 drop more than 250 feet. This 275 feet approx. could be much longer. Plant extensions are usually done by contractors. Permission to do this is not in the hands of the local cable system. It takes time to get the ok. It's all about priorities as for as what gets done first. It might take a little longer but it's worth the wait to get it done right. Wish there was a magic solution. I would call weekly untill you get the service. Try to do this nicely. Good luck

It doesn't hurt for him to ask and see what they are willing to do. I'm a suddenlink customer and i have a 300' rg11 drop. As do several other people in this area. That may not be true for all areas, but you never know until you ask. The worse they can say is no. I don't think theirs anything wrong with building the plant to meet him. But I do think that 900 dollars is a lot of money. Why not build the plant out a little shorter and make the drop a little longer. No reason why that isn't possible. I'm sure wade would appreciate spending less money for a service that will work just as well either way.

Technically, note technically, suddenlink doesnt rely on distance alone to determine if service is possible or not. If the signal from the tap is hot enough (note technically), you could have an RG6 drop go 300', but loss over distance is greater with an RG6. It seems likely you could get service with an RG11 drop, but you must also factor in the distances involved with going down the sub-pole to the underground (if you are going u/g that is, another 15-25'?), and the length of the outlet routing in the house itself. You are definately at the limit for just needing a regular drop or having the feeder extended. And $900 doesnt sound that bad for a feeder extension but you would likely be put on a wait list and it could be some time before they got it done. That is where the 35-40 days comes in as another poster stated. Most of the construction work is contracted out anymore because it is more cost effective, and you dont meet any prescribed criteria for a free build out. I have seen them waive fees for some people if you agree to a contract not to cancel service for 1-2 years so they dont spend the money to build and then you jump ship a month later and they've spent all the money for nothing.
