Re: [civil rights] public accomodation discrimination

When will people learn!!!!!!! If you have a problem with store policy, there is NO POINT in making the store employee's job any harder. They don't make the rules, whether stupid or not. At the end of the day, it's their ass and their job.

So next time, rather than being an ass to the lady, because that's what you were, just thank her and leave. Then go home and call and complain to the corporate office - where changes can occur.

Hum, that's pretty generic.

This may be a state or a federal issue.

What jurisdiction applies?

I really can't answer that because I'm not a lawyer. Discrimination issues, however, are usually a federal issue

The exchange was actually very nice, which is not conveyed by written word.

It is impossible for me to give a phone number that does not belong to me.

I share a phone with others.

It is not in my name.

I really do not have a phone, although I do hold the cable TV and water bill for the house.

Someone else is responsible for the phone.

Radio Shack has asked for customer phone numbers for years. When customers refuse they complete the purchase. I don't know if that is because it's illegal to require the phone number, or because requiring it is outstanding stupid.

edit: the reason companies ask for a phone number with purchase is to market your phone number

Ah, simians are on it, as usual.

It is crazy stupid; you're right.

What do you think is going on?

Well, that's dishonest, I think.

If companies worked off of honesty, they'd all be bankrupt. I've never heard of a company refusing service to someone that didn't want to divulge the information, though.

I don't know what would even make someone think this is a civil rights issue. It's a lame company policy. If you don't like it, don't shop there. End of story.

It could be just an employee that truly does not understand the difference of ordering in person and phoning in. I would just say sorry it is unlisted, which mine is. Offer to pay ahead of time as no possibility of walking out without payment then ask to talk to the manager on shift.
I had an employee wanting to take away my credit card as she smiled because the credit card machine said please swipe card.

Did someone take the "store employee asked for photo ID for credit card purchase" thread template and just change some words around?

You do have a phone *number*, as you have access to and the use of one, whether or not it is actually in your name.

You object to the policy, and I can understand why. A conversation with the manager of the store you visited might be a relevant starting point, if you have not tried that yet (not clear to me from thread you had done so yet).

As for legal issues surrounding your encounter with Pizza Hut, short a civil rights attorney from your state dropping in on the thread you will get no definitive answers here.

Start with your local city government, and work your way up until you get a satisfactory answer. Alternately, consult an attorney conversant with civil rights law.

You have no protected rights or classification here, just a stupid policy.
Follow-up with the manager so they can have a no phone number policy in the future for walk in orders.
If they don't change, go elsewhere.

Is it illegal? No. Their business, their rules.

Now, is it something to bring to upper management? Hell yes. I think they'd love to hear about the loss in walk-up cash sales, all over "requiring" some bullcrap number.

And I've ordered in-house at Pizza Hut before. I never had to provide a phone number for food at location.

And your proof of that phone number ownership is what?

This sounds similar to police officers who want to see ID for people walking on the sidewalk.

Did you read the thread?

"I share a phone with others.

»Re: [civil rights] public accomodation discrimination

He may not own it, which he states, but he apparently has use of it. In my days sharing a house years ago, we all used the single phone number as our own for ordinary uses, like getting pizza delivery, or filling out a job application, even though only one person actually owned the number.

The policy remains a stupid one, but I wasn't randomly making shit up.

I'm speaking in generic terms. How does one prove that has access to a phone line of their own? Is it a certain look or something?

Yes, the particular OP has a phone number. But having a mandatory phone number policy on the basis of "everyone has to have one" is idiotic...especially more so in today's age of concern over information leakage.

I don't know how one proves one has access to a phone on the spot like that.

I honestly don't entirely get your point, though we agree about the intrusive and stupid nature of the policy for something as simple as a cash sale.

I think you may have read more into my initial statement than was intended. Unless you were using it as a jumping off point for a more generalized statement.

For the record, I'm not a fan of the national security state.

I was more talking about the general arguement, not the OP on particular. Didn't mean it as a jumping off point, but thought it was relevant. Sorry for the miscommunication.
