| TWCNYC WideBand: Beware of using your own modem.
I got my "wideband" modem installed 3 days after it came out. They gave me a SMC wireless router. By the way the password and login is cusadmin, password for those of you that dont know already. As many of you have read, we were experiencing issues with downloading large files, and the modem losing sync. 5 times techs came out to resolve the issue. finally after 1 day they resolved it mysteriously. So i decided to get rid of their POS modem, and use my SB6120 that i bought from Fry's when it first came out. BTW, the Best Buy is Rego Park has these in stock. Well the problem came back with the Motorola. The modem would lock up after some downloads, BUT i read online that if you updated with the latest firmware, (the firmware i had was 1.0.1.1. Latest is 1.0.1.8) all the problems would go away. That doesnt happen..... Time warner cable of NYC WILL NOT upgrade your personally owned modems. So with this new technology, and a lot of firmware upgrades in the future, BEWARE. A lot of bitching, and some phone calls to motorola and timewarner, i went to best buy, and bought another modem with the latest firmware (look on the box it labels the firmware version number) and did the ol' switch-a-roo. returned the old one. Oh, and another thing, it takes 3 days to provision, and the level 3 tech do not know you can use your own modem. Good luck to all who provision your own modem with wideband service..... |

| At least now you should be doing MUCH better than the piece of crap SMC router is. That usually happens when someone is first to take a step and get the first generation of a tech toy. Today i had a TWC guy at my gf's place 11103 to install wideband cause sales rep told me over the phone that its available. My gf clearly has 1 single downstream channel 687mhz and 2 upload... I KNEW it's not available, but had him come anyway... He installed a brand new wire and the signal levels are now great, but as i said, the crappy SMC modem they brought gave me about 12 down and 3.7mbps up. No channels bonded. I told him to take that SMC back with him since i didnt want the turbo or whatever they were trying to sell us. We are not paying for installation too.
At least we got brand new drop. |

@rr.com | reply to Queens RR They are suppose to call you when its provisioned. To me, this is terrible. Comcast customer service reps can provision modems. they also provide firmware updates to self owned modems. tells you how much TWC is so behind in service. |

| reply to Queens RR Where exactly on the box is the firmware version? I have the box sitting in front of me and I see the exterior label has the part number, the customer serial number, the serial number and the MAC number but nothing that resembles a firmware version. |

| I figured that the firmware could be looked up on the config screen. I just confused by Queens RR's statement in his first post that the firmware version is listed on the outside of the box. I dunno if my box is older and now they're including the firmware version but I don't see anything that resembles the firmware on my packaging. Just curious if I was overlooking it. |

| Hmm, mine doesn't have a sticker on the plastic either. Oh well, it's no big deal. I returned the SB6120 today to Best Buy because I never used it. I bought it because I had the dropped connections problem with the Time Warner-provided SMC router/modem but after its config file was updated, it has been rock steady. Since Time Warner isn't charging a rental fee for the modem and I have it in bridge mode, I figured I'd save some money and stick with what's working for me. |

For people running the SB6120, is the DHCP server enabled in the modem? |

| Thanks. I;ve read other threads and in the manual, that if the WAN port is active it shouldn't be running. That's definitely not the case with mine.
I'm having difficulty getting a DHCP address to my router, not sure if this is the cause. Basically it's taking a very long time. My Apple Airport completely give up, I tried a Dlink DIR-825 and it took a while, I now have a Linksys WRT610 plugged in and after rebooting the modem, then unplugging and plugging in the ethernet port on the router it picked up an IP. We'll see what happens when I try and renew the IP.

| how long was a while? the very first time i plugged in my 6120 after it got provisioned, it took like 5-10 minutes before i had internet access. subsequent reboots of the modem without changing anything were fairly quick. i did try changing nic's, and it took a bit longer than a simple reboot for internet access to work, but not as long as the very first time i plugged in the modem. |

amazza Premium join:2007-09-18 Forest Hills, NY | Yeah, I'm not talking about the original provisioning part. That took me ~10 minutes. But to get an IP it takes a bit over a minute from the time I plug a device into the LAN port. |

anyone experiencing Motorola Modem reboots by itself lately?
Every night around 8:30pm - 9:30pm, my modem just keep rebooting by itself, stays up for 1 minute or less, then reboot again.
Even I unplug cable from Modem to my Router, still reboots, eventually stops after 30 minutes of random crazy reboot. |
