| taxes and fees CenturyLink's naked/dry DSL?
I live in St. Peters, MO and am considering switching from Charter cable high speed internet (5Mbps down/512Kbps up) for $47.99/month to CenturyLink's naked/dry DSL (1.5Mbps down/? up) which is priced -- at their GiveMePure.com website -- for $29.95/month. One thing that is keeping me from switching is that I hear that even their naked/dry DSL service has a lot of phone-line related taxes and fees -- adding up close to $7/month. I have my own DSL modem (a speedstream 3100) so am just interested in learning about the other taxes and fees that CenturyLink charges (on naked/dry DSL accounts). Can anyone chime in and confirm or deny what I've heard? |

| Yes, there are quite a few taxes and fees Centurytel tacks on to the $29.95 base price. My monthly bill is about $35 for pure DSL, of that $3.50ish is federal and state (MT) taxes and $1.25 is an "internet access fee" from centurytel. Also, before I got my own DSL modem they also charged me $2.95/mo for modem rental. Even with all the taxes and fees it is still cheaper than getting internet from any of the other DSL companies, because I don't have to pay for a phone line as well. |

| In the St. Peters, MO area, AT&T offers naked/dry 1.5Mbps DSL for $35/month -- and I don't think they charge the phone-line taxes and fees. That said, CenturyLink is the only DSL provider for my street address.
Another thing that is keeping me from switching is the fact that after the first year of DSL, CenturyLink will raise the price from the promo price of $29.95/month (which I know know is $35/month with taxes and fees). Iwas told CenturyLink's regular price is like $49.95/month for 1.5Mbps DSL service. Even if they only raise the price $10/month (instead of $20) then I'd be paying only a couple dollars less for 1.5Mbps DSL then I would for 5Mbps cable modem service that I can get from Charter now. This Charter price isn't a introductory price either, but it is a special offer I can get through my company. |

| reply to STL Portions of St. Peters are CenturyTel (CenturyLink). Most of St. Peters is AT&T. You are probably one of the unfortunate ones who has CenturyWhatever. That being said - My taxes, fees, etc.. are $4.43 + $1.25 "internet access charge". I have the 10M Pure package. Pure DSL does ride on dialtone. You can use this dialtone for 911. Charter service sucks butt around here. Their service sucks product-wise, and especially customer service-wise. Either AT&T or CenturyTel are a better alternative to Charter. -- Looks like Reverend Wright got his wish - God Damn America. | nunya, Thanks for the specific info about St. Peters and CentruyLink. Yes I'm one the lucky people in the area that gets CentruyLink instead of AT&T. I've had Charter cable modem service for years, and it seems okay. My neighbor across the street has it too and seems to have more problems than me. I think the difference might be that I have a commercial account (that my company was paying for -- but now I have to start paying for) whereas he has a residential account. So right now, I am leaning towards staying with the Charter 5Mbps (commercial) service that I have (for $48/month). If you don't mind me asking, how much is the 10M Pure service setting you back? I've never seen an advertised price on it -- just the 1.5Mbps Pure. According to CentruyLink's website, the fastest service they can offer at my address is 4Mbps. |

| reply to STL Thanks for all the helpful posts, but I am going to stay with Charter cable. The $48/month price for a 5Mbps commercial account seems pretty good. Today I had a problem with slow speeds, called at 2:30pm, and someone was out and had it fixed by 4pm. It turns out that my cable modem was going bad. The modems they provide only seem to last about 3 years, but then again they are powered on 365/24/7. |

| reply to dsldude08 Re: DSL availability at residence on "my side of street"
Hi there, i have been speaking to centurylink lately about connecting new residence (3 yrs old). the web site use to say not available, however the past few months it says i can get any package, i called the centurylink number on the side of a truck and got a local office, assumiong their in my area do calls. she could get availability on her end for my residence so she called an outside engineer, they said no too. then i persisted that i work from home and other neighbors have been solicited by centurytel previously for high speed, that it is available and and i certainly need this to happen, i even suggested id pay something for lines, amplifiers, etc to be ran if necessary. Well the engineer called her and she called me and said im outside the 18,000 ft mark howerver they could get me their modem and 512K download and 256 upload. for 54.00 month plus all taxes and ups me the modem for 14.00 bucks.
now my question is does their answer trump what the web site says? can i request the highest available speed and see what funnels through the line to my home, or am i simply capped at the 512K down speed. Could i get amplifiers and caps installed anywhere to strenghthen this signal boos for my house.
ps i have sprint evdo now, it sucks more or less. but i did a speed test and was at 586 down, and 292 up on average. so no better it seems through centurytel......
please help. if you need my address i could send it to you outside this forum. please reply to my email below, this is my first visit here and unsure how to check back...but will try..
Greatly appreciated..... scottpdavis@gmail.com |

No.
If I'm not mistaken, ER DSL already has special equipment on the line. The engineering dept is the final answer. -- Looks like Reverend Wright got his wish - God Damn America. Nancy Pelosi - House Minority Leader 2010 Harry Reid - Senate Minority Leader 2010 |

@embarqhsd.net | Here in Lady Lake, FL we are being charged a $3.00/mo charge for unlisted number on our dry dsl line from CenturyStink!
Local office says no way to get rid of this charge. Anyone else have the same experience? |
