Re: firearms

Typical thread.....here's my (trained and experienced) suggestion.

1) Wait a while to 'cool down' before you seriously think about this again - maybe a few months.

2) When you begin thinking about it again, find your state rifle associations contact info and ask them questions. Also, talk to a few large gun shop owners (if you can find them). They can answer a lot of questions and point you at various trainers, ect. Tell them you're NOT in buying mode yet.

3) If the answers you receive in this investigative phase still have you inclined to buy, I suggest purchasing a minimum legal length 20 or 12 gauge pump-action shotgun. Handguns require MUCH more skill and do not have the same "oh-$hit" factor to the bad guys.

4) LEARN to use this weapon (and all weapons) safely through professional training. Practice and practice some more on the range. if you have a spouse or children, be sure THEY also are trained (not necessarily in the USE, but trained to be AROUND weapons).

5) Study the 'color-code of mental awareness' and the legal ramifications of using your weapon.

6) ONLY THEN should you safely deploy your weapon in your residence. Hopefully, never to be used. BUT, safer then before in the knowledge that you have the tools and skill to protect yourself and your family.

yep. That is how a woman got shot in Fla a few weeks ago. Her hubby heard a noise, shot down the hell, killed her. He never looked to see who it was. Sad thing is, she slept next to him, and he never thought to chk her side of the bed.

Thanks to all. I'm usually very good about finding prior threads on a topic and not repeating things but I missed the "Buying a gon" one, thanks dandelion.

Regarding a shooting class, I took a target-shooting course years ago and did fairly well (this was with .22 caliber). It did not cover all the safety tips, handling and so on, so I will brush up.

Regarding laws, well this is Texas, and I'm confident that use for the home-defense purpose would be legal, with armed intruders at least, or if they threatened anyone. I will do more research tho.

Some of the things I was wondering about have been answered. For example, that shotguns are easier to aim but awkward. In regard to types of guns, I've read that revolvers are more reliable than the semi-automatics - but the police presumably want high reliability and they use the 9mm ones. I guess this would be something to ask in a gun shop.

Regarding whether it's necessary, well, these burglars came in while we were sleeping, and even went into our teenage girl's room, as well as stealing things. I got there seconds after they left. The police took a few more minutes.

Everyone was unharmed this time. But a co-worker advised that burglars return to the same houses. I want to be prepared and not let this get this far again. I'm not going to shoot anyone unnecessarily, or threaten meter readers, or anything like that.

Some stories to consider...

Out-of-context quote from a prior instructor: 'We carry handguns because we can, concealed. If you KNOW you're going to a gun fight, take a shotgun."

The joke about the Texas sheriff speaking at the opening of a library:
{Busybody} "Sheriff, I noticed you're carrying your pistol, are you expecting trouble?"
{Sheriff} "No Mam. If I was expecting trouble, I'd be carrying a shotgun."

Doc Holliday was the only smart one at the OK Corral...

Ahhhh - the Police - "Help, minutes away, when YOU only have seconds"

You're bound to get some of the most useless advice ever about guns by asking on a broadband forum.

I suggest »www.defensivecarry.com for general firearm and concealed carry advice.
I could not agree more! This is the last place you want to ask this question....

Wow, this topic comes up so often they should make a separate forum for it!
Yes they should. As a Canadian where the concept of getting a gun for protection is considered ludicrous unless you are a tin foil hatter, right wing wacko or all round idiot these threads are very enlightening into the American mindset.

Keep in mind that thieves often give prior victims enough time to get new stuff and then rob the house again.

Other than that, get the training and buy a shotgun. As a general rule of thumb a serviceable weapon($300?) should cost you less than good training.

Do Canadians have "home invasions" and roving gangs in their region?

Ask your question in a gun forum, these threads always give terrible advice.

A shotgun is probably the easiest and most effective defensive weapon.

My point was asking a legitimate question. Thank you for the answer I think.

Heaven forbid the Canadians have to read about guns....

Forget the dog. Get a big giant dog dish or two. One for water, one for food. Set next to sliding glass door. All items can be had for $10 or less at the pet food store.....

Oh, as for the gun, personally, I have a Glock 19... I spent tons of time on research though....

Another thing to think about... what AMMUNITION will you use... in many cases, AMMO is as important as the gun!!!

I have Gold Dot Hollow points myself....

Don't be fooled - PLENTY of Canucks have firearms. But evidently not the whiny liberal ones in ON. Too bad...

I read somewhere that we have more per capita than you. Scary isn't it.
Mind you they are mostly long arms but hopefully we can pry them from their cold dead hands if it comes to that.
Now excuse me I have a whiny Liberal meeting to attend.

You don't need a gun, you just need something that goes off and wakes you up REALLY LOUD before they get near the doors or windows. After that, a baseball bat or something blunt will do just fine just don't hit them in the head. Go for the knees and they are down for good. You have to be ready before they get in and they also can't know you are ready for them. Element of surprise is the most effective weapon in the world.

For me, I can't take another persons life. I don't think I could bring myself to live with that even if it was the worst person in the world. I would rather that terrible person suffer instead of just die because then, they might be able to feel some of the suffering and pain they have caused others.

If I could afford a home, there would be some kind of perimeter trip system, either a buried plate that goes off when x amount of weight is on it or a laser system that goes off when it is interrupted. Traffic light systems work the same way for determining how long someone has been waiting at the light so something similar must be available for this idear.

You could get bars for any windows at the back and sides of your home and any back doors, that way they can only enter from the front, you know, where the cops can see them when they finally pull up. I would think that most burglars always go through just one window if they can't get in anywhere else but the front. So you just have to be waiting in the dark and when they come through a window, wait until atleast one of them is all the way in and get them. Depending on your local laws you might be able to claim self defense and atleast no matter what, nobody had to die in your house. I think that most people move after someone dies in their house?

I would highly suggest an alarm system.
Since this is a techy area, maybe even a self install?
I installed my own alarm system and use a third party monitoring company. »www.smarthome.com

I have had someone try to break in the side door of my home twice. As soon as they opened that door the siren went off (Garage door) and they ran, both times. The cops showed up eventually but just to look at footprints (and never caught them).

Alarm systems are also good for fire and flood. In a fire, if the alarm company calls the fire department for you it may be a life saver. I had steam set off one of the heat detectors once and the phone rang in seconds, the fire department was on the line with the alarm company too.

However I do own several weapons. An M1 .32 carbine assault rifle, a few .22 rifles, and .32 revolver. I have kids, young ones, so I have trigger locks on all of them with the ammo locked up.

The only weapon I leave loaded is the M1 because of accuracy and the amount of rounds I can put into an area basically. The M1 is a carbine assault weapon so it is shorter than the basic rifle, reliable, and will certainly do some damage. But, it takes about 60 seconds to get the thing unlocked, which keeps the kids safe from unlocking it, and also allows me to use it.

So my suggestion, an alarm system.

Work on the gun slowly. I actually bought all of my guns, except the revolver, in Texas. You can buy anything there. Assault rifles put the fear of God into anyone... buy an AR15 for about $1,500 and LEARN TO USE IT. Get a flashlight mounted on it and laser sighting if you wish (do not shoot someone you know) Plus, if you are going to shoot then 1 shot 1 kill. If there are 5 guys, an AR15 will do it and leave you room to lay down some more rounds for the one hiding

Another point. You shoot and kill someone, no matter what the circumstances, it sticks with you your entire life.
