 fastpath and interleaved

CenturyLink
who changes a line from interleaved to fastpath and vise versa.

i use to be on 3mbps fast path and now on 10 interleaved .

current
Channel: Interleaved
Current Noise Margin: 15.0 dB (Downstream), 13.0 db (Upstream)
Current Attenuation: 15.0 dB (Downstream), 10.0 db (Upstream)
Current Output Power: 19.9 dB (Downstream), 12.2 db (Upstream)

a tech came out and told me that it shouldnt be a prob being on fastpath and he would check it out the next day and call me. but then i get a call from someone else saying im on the right port in the dslam (which isnt even a half mile away). thats why i wanna know who actually changes that. is it a setting that customer service can change or does a field tech have to do it at the dslam.
thanks for any replies.

Hopefully I am correct with my thoughts of ADSL2+...I am sure someone will correct me if I am wrong.

With ADSL2+ interleaved mode has many "levels". So if you have a clean line you should notice very little to no difference between interleaved and fastpath. I would assume this is negotiated or set by the dslam. If I remember correct, someone told me the lowest level is actually similair to fastpath.

What are your ping times like with the current setup? Many times, when moved to an ADSL2+ connection (which you're on), the Interleave depth is set very low, and there isn't near as big of a noticeable difference as there is when it's just a standard ADSL line.

That being said, Cust Service will more than likely not even know what you are talking about if you mention switching. You may be able to speak to someone in a Tier II position who will know. The change can be made by either a Central Office tech (local), or a Help Desk tech who has access to those kinds of changes....generally a Tier II or above.

I'm on 10M and also Interleaved, works just fine, and that's likely what you are supposed to have as previously noted that he DSLAM or equipment that sends you the signal has to negotiate the best rate for your lines in regards to cable type, distance, etc. Latency will be a bit higher on interleaved, but your line condition as in reliability/stability will be better, which is why the DSLAM negotiates the best channel/path and gives you what it thinks is best based on the information it has as reliability/stability is more important than latency in this case.

my ping times went from around 22 ms with 3mbps fastpath to around 37 ms 10mbps interleaved when i test on the pingtest website. still a great ping but it was better.. i probably should not worry about it for what i gather from you guys. i really appreciate the info. and also what setting would fastpath/interleaved be in the system of centurylink (if it can be turned on or off at all).

thanks very much

The data path settings are changed in the DSLAM itself, and are manually set when the line is provisioned. Yeah, your ping times look pretty good, so it should be fine.
