said by Matt :said by slyphoxj :As for buying a used bike off of Craigslist... is there any way to make sure that I wouldn't be inadvertently buying stolen goods? Have them send you the serial number off the bike and check it with the local police department. Yea, you've GOT to watch bikes on Craigslist! Checking the NYC listings, it turns out that well over 80% are HOT. Beware. |

| reply to dibbb Interesting thread with some sound advice. My brother has a Specialized Hardrock that I borrow from time to time and it seems like a decent bike. I been thinking of getting my own to get into shape and be more active and got some good ideas here, thanks -- "When the power of love overcomes the love of power, the world will know peace." -Jimi Hendrix |

| Specialized has a very good line! Get a bike of your own, you won't regret it. Of course, being in NJ, your "riding season" is as short as mine, but it's still fun. I actually ride pretty much all year long, just put on my Winter tires on my Fuji. |

His bike is 5 years old or more and still holding up great. I have to save money up first but 500-700 will be my range I think. I would ride all year long too, I work outdoors so cold doesn't bother me much. -- "When the power of love overcomes the love of power, the world will know peace." -Jimi Hendrix |

1 edit | There's plenty of nice rides out there available. Look also at Dynamic Bike, from Massachusetts. They have a direct shaft drive bike that's astounding. No chain. I test rode one, but too pricey for me right now.

This is a technology that interests me, but, too expensive once you add on the options you want. |

| not bad, I'll look into them. I think a Hybrid bike is what would work for me,, something for off-road and road. My brothers is more mountain bike than road. He trash picked a few road bikes and rehabbed them though. Thanks for the info -- "When the power of love overcomes the love of power, the world will know peace." -Jimi Hendrix |

| Hybrids have the larger wheel size (700C) of a road bike but a mountain bike frame, though lighter in weight. Components, like shifting, transmission, braking, are like road bikes, though. Cool compromise in an urban environment. PM me if you want more advice. I'm INTO bikes. |

Another vote for buying a bike at least a notch above giant box store choices. If a cheap bike has even minor issues, like occasional hard shifting, it will be anything less than enjoyable to ride.
One of the issues with used bikes is worn out sprockets. On the other hand, it is very possible to find a great used bike, as in some decide not to keep bikes, or upgrade etc.
Don't know if your timing or location work out for this, but if you are near a college or boarding school, it's not unusual to find incredible deal on bikes that the departing students do not want to transport to their next location. Bought a high end pair of home audio speakers for $3 that way. They sure sound good in my cellar workshop. |
