6mbps line does not use full downstream.

I got Uverse a few months ago and have loved it since. I have the 6mbps line. It has never really given me any major issues except the download speed never really seems go pass 700kB/s. Shouldn't I be getting speeds near 768kB/s?

Your confusing your bits and bytes. Where are you getting that figure from?

If you use a speed test you should get results like this

Download Speed: 17123 kbps (2140.4 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 1482 kbps (185.3 KB/sec transfer rate)

For a 6meg line 700KB/sec is correct.

I'm just converting using the google calculator.

1 megabit= 128 kilobytes. Is this incorrect?

Edit: I just did a speed test. I don't believe these are true speeds since I was downloading some files via usenet @ 700kB/s.

Hello, this is Matt with U-Verse Tier II Technical Support. I want to resolve your issue as quickly as possible. Please send your account information to uversecare@att.com I'd like to get your issue resolved immediately. From here it looks like everything appears normal, it could be the server and not the service, but if you want to send me the info I'd be more than happy to look over the physical plant and make sure it's not something on our end.

Thanks, Matt

Matt is correct, that it could be a server issue. Austin is 20 miles away from me, while Dallas is 190. Here is my test on the Dallas server.

Also, Matt is the man! If it's an AT&T issue he WILL get it taken care of, as I speak from experience!

Here are my new stats from speedtest. It appears I'm running close to 6/1mbps.

Also I stumbled upon this
From reading this, 6mbps=6000kbps=700kB/s. Is this correct?

Looking at this it shows me that your speeds are pretty good, have you tried speak easy? Or anything that might be a state away from you?

Thanks, Matt

Yes that is correct as I stated 700 KB/sec is what you should get roughly on a 6 meg line. For speedtests 5.8 is right on target as well.

Here are my results from speakeasy. I connected to a Dallas server.

Download Speed: 4979 kbps (622.4 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 947 kbps (118.4 KB/sec transfer rate)

I just want to know if I'm suppose to get speeds up to 768kB/s or if my max is 700kB.

No you won't get 768 and where are you getting that number from?

Well I'm using binary conversion so I guess that's where the confusion stemmed from.

You overly complicating it. You are hitting the numbers you should be and on downloads 700KB/sec is your max +/-

And not only that, but the further the distance is you will see some drops in your maximum speed as you are hitting more hops along the way. In addition you are probably using about 98 - 99% of the total bandwidth we allocate for your Internet usage, (of course the 2% is for overhead) So you are getting the most/best you're going to get, not only that but your ping times look really good as well. I would say you have a good line!

Thanks, Matt

No, 6 Mb/s would be 700 kB/s.

Can you elaborate on this?

What's the difference between KB and kB? The k=kilo, b=bit, B=byte.

So essentially KB is kB.

»lamar.colostate.edu/~hillger/correct.htm (bottom of the page)

»englishplus.com/grammar/00000058.htm (metric abbreviations)

k is the abbreviation of kilo, K stands for Kelvin. Nitpicking, I know.

Actually it's KB/sec look any speedtest and when you download via a browser it's KB not kB.

Speedtest.net does it in Mbps. Firefox downloads shows the file size incorrectly by abbreviating it KB.

However, if you read the first link I linked to, it shows the correct (and incorrect) abbreviation. K == Kelvin, k == kilo.

So, I'm sorry, it's wrong. I won't belabor the point and bore everyone here by arguing with you about it, but the abbreviation is kB.
