| TTC thinks about raising fares
Once again with the TTC facing a revenue shortfall , instead of controlling costs, we'll just jack up the fares again.
This is the same TTC that bought wheelchair accessible buses(not an issue) but actually holds less people then a conventional bus, so they have to buy more to move the same people.
The biggest problem with the TTC is they are overstaffed and have people well past their prime working.
There is an older gentleman working the booth at my local station. he's got to be pushing 80(mid 70's at the very least). on September 30th I walked in with $120 cash (why do we need to pay cash.. what happened to automated dispensers that take credit/debit?) This was for 5 tokens and a metropass (exact change).
First it took 5 minutes to figure out I had 6 20's, then he needed a calculator to figure out what I owed him!
Then we have the guy standing there (if he's not chit chatting with the old guy) making sure we have transfers, pay a fare or have a metropass!
Apparently they are losing $2m on the "transferable" metropass. Who's brilliant idea was that? One of the folks I work with has a nanny, she comes to work with the Metropass, then gives it to my co-worker to come to work with. Bingo $100 gone.. how many more time is this scenario repeated across Toronto.
How about telling the union they are going to accept a 5% pay cut.. -- Jake: "Four fried chickens, and a coke" Elwood: "And some dry white toast, pleas |

| From what I have seen of it, there is no way the TTC thinks, it does however imagine, daydream, and inflict the occasional nightmare on its rider ship, but all of it is without logic, or reason.
The fact they are moving towards hiking fares should be a shock, as rider ship increses costs increase(to hire more idle hands), as ridership falls, costs increases (to keep idle hands busy).
Why you guts haven't shoved a couple of live pantographs up Millar & Giambrone asses and rode them out of town is beyond me. |

| reply to elwoodblues The easiest way to look at this is to weigh it against driving downtown and parking.
It will take a hell of a price hike to come even close to the cost of driving/parking downtown.
I do agree though, there is a LOT of room for improvement in efficiency in the TTC but it will never happen as long as the union is there. |

| reply to Robrr I work at Keele/Dundas where daily parking is $3.50 or $60/month for a pass.
I guestimate the cost of fuel is around $5. Time to drive, same as the TTC, but no crowds, no ignorant riders.. etc... I listen to the Radio...enoy ,myself.
So $8.50/day vs 5.45 with a metropass (a nickel more if I buy tokens) -- Jake: "Four fried chickens, and a coke" Elwood: "And some dry white toast, pleas |

Yeah, but you might run into someone like Michael Bryant... If you don't argue with drive you don't have to worry. Besides the biker was stupid enough to get pissed off and grab hold onto the car. I have been riding my bike 8 years. I did wipe out once when someone was tailgating me but I was being stupid, I should have let the driver pass.
On the subway you can get stabbed or shot, maybe you haven't been reading or watching the news lately. |

1 edit | reply to elwoodblues The TTC is on crack. They are talking about jacking the Metropass from $109 to $126/month and cash fares go to $3, tokens would be 8 for $20
WOW Metropass is about a 14% increase Cash fare roughly 8% Tokens rougly 9%
We haven't had a fare increase since 2007. It does cost money to operate transit and we feel our customers accept that. If we maintain service levels they're accepting of a fare increase," said TTC spokesman Brad Ross
So lets do it in the middle of a recession, brilliant planning.
I want to add(even though this not a political forum) , this part in parcel the Common Sense Revolution hard at work. Before Mike Harris the provincial government paid 50% of the operating costs and 75% of the capital cost.
Hey TTC want to save money? Close Mel's subway to nowhere, and don't build the white elephant that's going up to Vaughn.
Even better question, why is when I leave Toronto proper I have to pay an extra fare, even if I don't use the transit in the burbs, but not the other way around. If you come into Toronto from the burbs, if you don't use the TTC, you don't pay that extra fare, maybe we can get some cash there? | reply to elwoodblues Elwoodblues maybe carpooling would be better you would save some money.
It's crazy that they are going to hike the fairs again. That only pisses people off and will look ways to rip off the TTC. I wonder how many people who makes minimum wage can afford to use the transit. |

If one could use the transit, it is much, much less expensive than a car. -- This message was composed using 100% post-consumer recycled electrons, please recycle responsibly. Composed and sent with Mac OS X... because windows sucks. Public PGP Key available. Opinions expressed are entirely my own.

| Car payments don't count.. (besides mine is paid for) since you pay whether you drive to work or not. Insurance same thing, mine sits in the driveway most of the week, and I still pay.
Maintenance I'll give you... -- Jake: "Four fried chickens, and a coke" Elwood: "And some dry white toast, pleas |

Insurance same thing, mine sits in the driveway most of the week, and I still pay. Maintenance I'll give you... Depends - if someone can live off of transit alone - it would be cheaper. Regardless, wear and tear on a car, especially city driving, means you'll need a new(er) car quicker - if you don't use public transit. Insurance offers discounts if you don't drive to work. (which is always why they ask, 'How many KM one way to work')
Place like Kitchener are useless for transit unless your work and home are on mainline - but Toronto has a good system. -- This message was composed using 100% post-consumer recycled electrons, please recycle responsibly.
