| West Virginia - Fibernet running fiber outside my home I know its the wrong forum, but I can't find a Fibernet thread anywhere, so my apologies.
For the past two days, I've noticed that Fibernet is running fiber (my area has poles not underground). Last night, they left the spool attached to the line and I snapped a picture of it. »twitpic.com/ocye7
I've heard that Fibernet is upgrading their network, that they offer Fiber to the Business and yes, I do live in a business district.
However, we live in a row house courtyard with 21 homes...none of which is business... they've run the fiber up and down the back alleys of the courtyard which makes me wonder if this is fiber to the home?
Wishful thinking I know especially since Verizon FIOS wont happen ever now that Frontier is buying them out.
Any thoughts? | |

Fibernet (used to be owned by Charter) promised WV that they would build a fiber ring around the Charleston metro area for some tax breaks, and I believe they're finally getting around to it? I'd be interested in knowing what's available as well. | |

| Re: West Virginia - Fibernet running fiber outside my home it might be a the metro fiber ring.. odd was that Verizon trucks were outside two days before. I want to believe it's that Verizon is installing fiber (not likely with the forthcoming Frontier sale).
Are you sure that Fibernet was previously owned by Charter? If not mistaken, the starters of Fibernet came from Verizon. They are now owned by OneCommunications. | |

I steer all of my clients away from them after their week long, system wide outage a year or so ago. It would be interesting to know if they're actually going to start doing any FTTH. Ntelos has their Metro Ethernet fiber down town, but it's $1200 for 10mbit/10mbit | |

| Yeah, those are the out of state workers who are here to help maintain and troubleshoot our lines and equipment. Most of them should hopefully be out by the end of the year as VZ is training from within right now. They're also hoping to get some to transfer here who got layed off in other VZ states. If they still need a few more after that, then they're going to be hiring and training new people from the outside. I'm suppose to be hearing something sometime this month.. | |

I am from Charleston too on Campbells Creek, which is up Rt. 60 in the Eastern part of the county. | |

After calling her back she said there no prices yet as they were just getting a feel for the demand. They do think that the speed will be 10/5. The number they called from was 720-1614. Maybe someone else will have better luck getting pricing info | |

Interesting, maybe Fibernet is getting ready to start up their own fttp or fttn deal in certain areas in the coming year! Call back and find out more info if you can please and see if this is for fiber to the home, or fiber to the node. Let us know! Thanks!
P.S. What street in Dunbar? I suppose its somewhere near the town? | |

Apparently there are select few people in Dunbar that they have contacted and my name is on "the list". The person said it shouldn't be to long before I'm contacted by fibernet. | |

So, is it fiber to the home? This sounds like it may be fiber to the home (FTTH) like Verizon is doing in other states. If you or your neighbors happen to sign up, there will be an Optical Network Terminal (ONT) installed outside of the home near where the old Verizon Network Interface Device (NID) is located. This is for fiber connections that go to the home to use for Internet/TV/Video. | |

1 edit | Yeah, most likely no TV from Fibernet if they are in fact ready to roll out FTTH in selected areas.
If Verizon stays around, then yes. If not, maybe NTelos will decide to expand here and offer FTTH services like they do in parts of VA.
You would think you would here something about FTTH in and around Charleston first before you would like a smaller town like Dunbar if in fact that is what they're up to.
If our road is never going to get upgraded in the future, I'm going to try to get fiber to my home under contract with one of these companies. | |

| damn thats crazy! i don't think they even currently offer service out that way either. something is definitely up. It's weird if true though. Not sure why they would even be out in areas like that just yet. It seems like they would try all this in and around Charleston, and then head out into those areas? Someone who has more time on their hands should dig up some info and/or talk to the techs if you see them around doing installs! | |
