Why do I have to keep resetting my modem & router?

I was wondering if someone could be more useful than the guy at WOW I talked to on the phone.

Every day or two I cannot access the internet from my computer or xbox. I have to completely unplug my modem & router, then everything is fine...until the next day.

The guy at WOW says are you using a Router? I answer yes. Well then its the router. End of conversation as far as he was concerned.

SO I am sure this is a possible explanation, but my question is if it is the router, why does this keep happening? Its very frustrating and my wife has about had it since she is unable to use the computer while I am at work.

Router is Dlink DIR-615. I only have 2 things connected, my computer and an xbox and they are both wired connections. Rarely are the 2 even being used at the same time.

Do you have the latest firmware for your router? A quick google search turns up lots of people having the same issues with various ISPs and for most updating to the latest firmware seems to have fixed the issue.

I might suggest pulling the router out temporarily and see if you're still having problems. That'll help you understand where the problem lies - your router, or WOW's cable service.

Thats what the wow guy said too. I guess its worth a shot. then I have unplug one to use the other etc. Seems ridiculous.

Can anyone give me any insight as to what would cause this problem if it is the router?

Bad router would be my only guess. You could plug your WOW modem and both computers into the switch section of the router and just use it as a dumb switch. That'll let both computers surf at the same time since WOW provides 3 IP address to all modems.

Do you download stuff with bittorrent? I've seen a number of routers that seem to lockup from time to time when doing so. The router has an internal mapping table to remember which port on the external interface maps to which computer/port on the internal interface. These tables have a limited memory size assigned to it. Usually it's way more than enough to handle nearly anything you throw at it. However, when using bittorrent you often have a huge number of connections (and it's not just simultaneous connections that count, so setting a limit on that won't help). As a result, the router runs out of memory and can no longer accept new connections (in or out) until the old entries in the mapping table expire (which could take an hour or more). The result of this is that it appears your internet connection has failed. However, if you already have an established connection (like FTP, SSH, telnet, etc) it would continue to function as long as it's connected.
