| 2 Actiontec and 1 SSID?
I have two Actiontec MI424-WR. They are not connected to the ONT.
I want to use them for general LAN and wireless use. I want to set both the the same SSID and same WEP key. I plan to have one in the basement and one on the 2nd floor.
Doing this, will they both work together, providing good coverage no matter where I am (its a big house), and allow my wireless devices to use one or the other whenever I move to an area where one signal is better than the other? What if I periodically disconnect one of the Actiontec?

Marlborough, MA | Best way is to assign different channels, that way wireless clients should be able to roam (relatively) seamlessly. Taking one off the air would be fine as long as they can cover each other's areas. |

It is likely that your wireless devices will still pick up the fact that they are different routers with different mac addresses...I don't think it will work the way you want it to and would suggest an alternative of just having multiple ssid's and passwords pre-programmed so they automatically connect to the alternate if it cannot connect to the primary... This may be more seemless than what you are proposing... |

Connect them both to your primary router LAN-to-LAN, let the primary handle DHCP, and it should work. That would keep them all on the same subnet. |

This may be more seemless than what you are proposing... This sounds wrong to me. At the wireless level, no-one cares about MAC addresses for purposes of SSID association. Worse, from my experience, if you switch to a different SSID, at least one host platform I have used (windows XP) will complete reinitialize the connection (e.g. drop the IP and do a DHCP cycle again), blowing away anything you might be doing. |

I have two Actiontecs using 1 SSID in my house and they work perfectly. I have one upstairs which is the primary and one downstairs which I use as the supplementary router and for LAN access in my family room. I followed the instructions in the FAQ at the top of this forum's page, clicked 3.0 Networking and then the link for getting an internet connection in a room where there is only coax to set up the second router. I know your situation is slightly different but I think the setup would work for you too.

they will work perfectly fine. You can have several with the same SSID and key and they wil work fine. the devices will seamless roam between them. |

| Excellent! I configured one with channel 1, the other with channel 6.
With my laptop, sitting 3 feet away from channel 6, I had connectivity and excellent signal. Then, I powered off channel 6. Voila! I am still connected, with a low signel from channel 1. Turning channel 6 back on results in the signal being excellent again.

Or do both need a connection to eachother somehow, and then they need the same SSID/pass/diff channel to work seamleslly? |

There are a few purpose built units that do support this,
