| reply to mityfowl The Wii's selection of emulators is actually good in my opinion. You can probably play virtually all NES, SNES, and even some N64 games. Right now I am experimenting with GBA games, though the graphics are not the best because it was a handheld. There are emulators for systems even older than the NES, but the graphics are much too crude for today so I never even bothered loading them. Unfortunately, I believe the easy softmod to load the homebrew channel is limited to older versions of the Wii. |

| reply to Selenia Actually 480p is Enhanced-definition television or extended-definition television. IDTV was still broadcast in 480i so it could remain compatible with older TV's. IDTV improvements may be made at the television transmitter or receiver. Improvements include enhancements in encoding, digital filtering, scan interpolation, interlaced line scanning, and ghost cancellation. Basically the TV could simulate a 480p picture. -- Alumni "Mental State" |

| reply to r81984 said by r81984 :said by Aozora :Xbox 360 and PS3 both have "HD" support although few games are even 720p native and countable on one hand are 1080p native games. They offer a far greater resolution and picture on an HDTV than the Wii though. The Wii has HD support, but will only go to 480p. 480p is not HD. It was actually the standard for IDTV(Improved Definition TV) and thus supported by HDTVs as it was a forerunner to HDTV. Been awhile since I've seen an IDTV. Most ps3 games support at least 1 of the 3 HD modes(720p, 1080i, 1080p), not sure if the same is true of 360, but I would hope so. The old xbox even had some games that supported at least 1 HD mode. |

| reply to mityfowl I think all these posts make the obvious complicated. I will simplify everything down to the last thing.
Xbox 360 and PS3 both have "HD" support although few games are even 720p native and countable on one hand are 1080p native games. They offer a far greater resolution and picture on an HDTV than the Wii though.
Xbox 360 is the KING of multi player games for consoles with ease. The downside is that the PS3 is a better entertainment system with Blu Ray as well as games, and it even has browsing.
The Xbox 360 has the bloodiest and most violent games while the PS3 comes in second and the Wii far last.
Now, for kids games, if the parents are forceful on what the kid can play then the Wii has a better library. The downside are its horrendous controllers and lack of functions in the controller.
Xbox 360 and PS3 both are priced at $299 which is $100 more than the Wii.
If the system will only be for the kid then the Wii is the way to go. If the console will be used by the family for movies or such and perhaps briefly for gaming by the dad or something then the PS3 is likely the better choice. If the dad is a hardcore gamer and needs a great library and lots of online competition then the Xbox 360 is the way to go. |

| reply to kieranmullen I researched the new slim ps3 and am disgusted. Look for a fat one. Those interested can see my full rant in the appropriate forum. No question now, go with the Wii. This, however makes for no must-have systems this generation, which is sad. The ps3 was the only one for me due to at least somewhat making up for the games with extra features, including being able to play the great PS1 and ps2 games with better speed and improved antialiasing. That point is now moot. Hopefully mine lasts until the next gen. |

| reply to insomniac84 A Wiiware FPS that is pretty popular is called onslaught and water warefare. Both only a few bucks but pretty popular. I got the later. | reply to mityfowl I would get the Wii with a 480p cable. The graphics will look just fine because most all Wii games have a cartoon like look. There are more games that are appropriate for an 8 year old on the Wii than what you will find on a PS3 or a 360
I wouldn't throw a Xbox 360 into the mix because they have a crappy internet connection. The main appeal to the 360 is Xbox Live and if you are on satellite then Xbox Live is going to be useless. The PS3 is now $299 and the Wii is $199 so there isn't much difference in price.
I have a Wii and a PS3. My 5 year old and I get a lot of play time out of Lego StarWars and he likes to watch me play Super Mario Galaxy. After he goes to bed I switch the PS3 and play COD4 or COD5 until I go to bed.
I won't allow him to put the Wii in his room because we want to control when and what he can play which is pretty much limited to the weekends if he has been good in school. |

Get a wii. Clearly online play is not a feature you can use and you don't want an 8 year old dealing with such crap.
So get a wii. It works with online play on your connection great. If it does not, you still have good kid games to choose from. |
