[ fiber tech] Fios connection drop outs? help?

Maybe someone can help me here.
Recently my fios ping times been very low, around 6-10 ms some times little higher. Any how, this couple of days my connection will drop and i have to wait for 10 seconds before i can surf the web again. Funny thing is i can still video chat and receive twitter messages, Not sure what's going on. it doesn't only once and never happens again. It sucks, because when i game online i time out and have to reconnect again. please help!

Do a search for "NAT pool connection error" for more information.
It sounds like you have an actiontec router which has a very small NAT table. The result is when you reach the maximum number of connections, it won't allow any new ones. Existing connections seem to stay open.

The only solution at this time is to replace the actiontec router with one of your own.

It's too bad that we have to do our own troubleshooting because Verizon tech support is so poor. If you want them to straighten it out plan on spending at least 4 hours on the phone with low level techs trying this and that nonsense (none of which will be related to your issue) then you can put your foot down and demand a NOC technician to straighten it out. Once you get the higher level tech on the job they fix it within an hour usually.

Enjoy the great service you get in the beginning! Verizon service works great for a few months and then slowly degrades, not sure if it's more people joining up or equipment degrading but it is horrible and you'll end up switching to some other provider.

I give them an "F" minus.

I've had FiOS for almost two years and my speeds have done nothing but increase over the years (15/15 to 20/20 to 25/15 but the latter gets close to 25/25).

You're actually looking for a router, not a "FiOS modem".

A DLink DIR-655 is an excellent model router for use with FiOS. One of the main things I like is it displays the connection table. You can refresh it and it will show you the TTL, then when the connection expires, it falls right off the list.

It may not be for everyone, though. You'll need to get your router's connection to the ONT (which is as close to a modem as you're going to get) switched over to cat5. That can be done cheaper if you're handy at wiring and patient at tech support.

If you're neither, you can get a tech visit to make the change, although it will cost you. $89 appears to be the current rate.

Start by checking out the FAQ here. »Verizon Online FiOS FAQ »Replacing the Actiontec (part 1): Coax to Ethernet

Or a Dlink DGL4500 gaming router. Which I think is similar to the 655.
