| [OOL] Cable box for EVERY TV?
Hi,
I had a visit from a UVerse guy today. They're finally coming to my neighborhood.
One thing the UVerse guy said was that OOL would soon be requiring a cable box on every TV.
Since I have quite a few TV's in the house this could be quite costly.
Is this true?
Thanks,

| Well if you have an analog TV, they'll at some point remove all the analog channels to where you would need a box. If you have a DTV/HDTV with a QAM tuner, you'll be able to watch whatever is unencrypted digitally until they encrypt it all and then you will have no choice but to get a cable box to receive anything you pay for as they'll make cable tuners....analog and QAM useless. I don't like it as much as the next person. It's that they rather use cable boxes instead of upgrading traps to control services. I would rather use my QAM tuner to watch any channels I pay for vs needing the currently clunky slow boxes. |

Any idea when this is going to happen?
It seems like a good reason to go U-Verse. They're offering a box for each TV free for the first year.

Cablevision wont require the use of a box on every tv within a year and U-verse requires them on every tv NOW. unless there is another reason to switch you can't consider that a good reason.
If you don't think a year goes by fast ask any one who is looking to extend a "special" one year deal with any provider. |

1 edit | reply to fearlessfosdick With Uverse you get one DVR box for free for U200 and above, every other TV needs it's own box at $7 a month but you can watch the recordings from the DVR on any of the boxes. The biggest problem with Uverse is the HD PQ really sucks and you can only get 2 HD streams to your entire house at any one time.
You should be able to get at least broadcast basic from Cablevision with out a box for at least few more years in CT. |

@optonline.net | reply to fearlessfosdick You pretty much already need a cable box for every TV. Otherwise, you get next to no basic cable channels at this point...it's horrible. I find myself flipping through the same dozen or so basic cable stations left. |

| It's one thing to expend capital to buy a TV which, with a little luck, will last for 10 years or so.
It's quite another to go on the hook for $7 per month ($84/year) forever!
I actually have 7 TV's and only one box. The extra six boxes would come to around $500 per year. That feels like a lot to spend for cable.

| reply to fearlessfosdick It would seem that someone would manufacture a box to use a cable card and receive these channels.

This item is not sold except to cable companies. It is not made for general sales to the public.

| reply to fearlessfosdick Even if you buy the hardware, at say $200 per box, you will still on the hook for renting a CableCard for each of them at $2.00/month each (plus installation).
So, the differential is more like $4 or $5 per month per TV. I'd rather pay that than own the hardware and worry about repair/replacement. For the monthly fee, I can swap out the device anytime with no questions asked, and I am more or less immune to any upgrade costs in the future...
In reality, it all probably ends up being a wash in the end. |

| Cablevision charges $110 to replace a lost/damaged/stolen box. So I have to think that the price of the box is at this amount or lower.
It would take a little over 15 months to break even on the box. Considering CV has a waiver for cable cards the only rental necessary would be a smart card fee |

That feels like a lot to spend for cable. FF Since UVerse is also charging $7 a month per box, then cable seems like the only choice. FIOS and DirectTV also need a box on every TV, so no real alternatives with them.
And if you are wealthy enough to own seven TV's, then $7 a month certainly won't break you. |

DirecTV is cheaper though, at $4.99/month each for your second and greater box. The first box is included with your program package. Cablevision charges for program package, and every box, even the first. At this point, Cablevisions boxes are nearly double that of DirecTV's, which hasn't increased their mirroring/leasing fee ... I don't think ever. |
