Qnext beta 2.0

I was going to just reply to a message back from Nov but it was too old to reply to.

Qnext is just a few months or less from a final release. I wondered if anyone had looked at its potential? Being in beta bugs are still being found and features being added.

Wondered if anyone has looked at the potential of Qnext. Sorry for the long post, but thought I'd paste some descriptions, changes, and comments!

I have been trying out a beta messenger that you might of interest. It's called Qnext and the current release is 2.0

Besides doing the primary purpose of messaging Qnext, Yahoo, AIM, MSN, and ICQ, (what ever advertising is there I don't notice! Not obtrusive like AIM and Yahoo) it has several features that might make some of your tasks easier?

File transfers within Qnext are direct p2p with the server only involved in the signing on. NO file limitations except for the upload and download speeds, and the physical connections between the 2 computers. I have read one commentary where it has simplified obtaining files to review or even beta test. Both file transfers and messaging are encrypted for security.

Some of the items I have not tried are phone connections, photo slide shows, gaming, music streaming, etc. There is even work for adding later video conferencing.

A Zone can contain exciting services such as File Sharing, Group Text Chat, Qnext Photo and Live Online Games. In addition you can create your own chat rooms using the Qnext IRC while at the meantime you can listen to your favorite music with our Jukebox service . Well the big one has finally arrived. You may have noticed a rather large update appear this morning. After a number of months of development, we are very happy to let the public try out all of the new features that the private beta testers have been so excited about.

In this release you will find:

- New branding (watch for this website to update)
- IRC plug-in
- Jukebox...a new P2P music streaming service that is fantastic
- J2SE 5.0 from Sun Microsystems
- Contact Grouping
- Enhanced Security
- Release of the Qnext SDK for 3rd Party Developer Support

This is kind of a soft launch of the version 2.0 and you will see a few updates of skins and additional features arriving in the coming days. Let us know what you think.

- Larue.

Ever hear of Qnext?

No, I didn’t think so. It’s not a household name. Yet.

I have to thank PC World’s newsletters for turning me on to this fairly new service. What? What IS Qnext? Think Trillian without a lot of bad skins, popping windows, and, most of all, hassles. Then throw in a lot of useful features that, unlike Trillian, are FREE and some others that will be for-pay once the service is out of beta.

The Qnext client is available for Windows (except NT) and Linux, currently. Upcoming is a Mac client release.

You get things like user-to-user file transfer, file sharing, VoIP, universal instant messaging to users of Qnext (of course), Yahoo, MSN, ICQ, and AIM, video chat, video conferencing, IM conferencing, and Qnext GO (cute little graphic version of GO that you can play with your buddies while you're waiting for a flight or some such).

As if that weren't enough, the upcoming Premium services will be QnextMyPC and Photo sharing. Looking at their descriptions of how they're going to implement GotoMyPC over their network, it looks VERY slick. All you need to do is log in from the Qnext Web site, using ANY browser, and you're sitting in front of your own PC.

For those who might be a little nervous, the entire service and all clients use at least 192-bit security. That's more than good enough when it comes to everyday IM duties, but it switches to 512-bit security when you go to QnextMyPC. Strong stuff!

Just keep in mind that the whole thing, including the desktop client, are in beta and you'll be okay. I found that the main window of the client resized up and down, but not sideways. Only mildly annoying, but it serves to remind you that this isn't a set and polished service. It's one of the few ways you could guess, believe me!

and wrote this short comment about the Qnext 2.0 beta release

You all know I’m a fan of Qnext IM. They’ve just released version 2.0 of the client and added a few nice features, especially in the games network area. They’ve also done some work on the client interface, with lots more to come. If you’re running Qnext, make sure auto-update is on and it will pick the update from their site.

Things would happen more quickly, I suspect, but the whole thing is written in Java where things apparently take time to tweak. In any case, newbie or not, check it out at www.qnext.com
