Any danger in putting an AP in a cold (freezing) place?

I want to move my AP up to the attic in order to get better reception, but the attic is not heated and gets down to -10F in the Wintertime.
The AP is DAP-1522. The specs of this AP (and most indoor APs or routers) say that 32F is the min operating temp.

Does anyone know if there really is some danger of putting an AP in a cold area? It will still be protected from precipitation. Maybe if I put it inside a bag in order to preserve some of the heat?

Thanks for the help!

Help with connecting to WPN network w/ vista

Hi all, first off I just want to say thanks for this forum and all the good people on here. I have learnt a lot from this place.

My problem is this: I cannot connect to a WPN network, and I need some help please. Basically what happened is this. I just moved into my new place last week, and I am sharing an internet connection with my neighbor. I told him that I would secure it for him, because it was open season on it, and that I would pay for half his internet bill. Now he is gone for a week and a bit, and while playing around with the router settings about to put a password on for the wifi I managed to turn on WPN and now I'm locked out.

As soon as I clicked on add wireless client under the WPN setting, I got booted, and right away windows wireless says that my settings don't match. I didn't setup a passkey, or any authentication, and windows still says it's an unsecured network, but I can't get past that point. I have tried all the different authentication options in the properties for the connection, and only when I put on CCKM which I have no idea how to use, does the connection stop saying that the router settings don't match the adapter settings.

Anyway, please help me out if you have any idea what I can do other than wait a week for my neighbor to get back and do a 'hard reset' on the router. Not to mention me looking pretty stupid because I told him setting up a secure wifi network is easy...

Anyway big essay I wrote, sorry about that, but this is stressing me out as I have a bunch of work to do in the coming days and need some net. Plus there seems to be so little info out there on WPN.

Thanks for you time and comments.

The router is a Siemens adsl sl2-141, and I am running vista home 64bit with an AR928x wireless adaptor.

[XP] XP issue with wireless networks

I recently dug an old laptop out of storage and fixed it up for a friend. Everything seems to be working great except for the wireless- the system can connect to completely unsecured networks, but not to networks that have ANY form of encryption.

The only XP cd I had around was without any service packs, so I installed it and then upgraded to sp1 and then went to sp3; slipstreaming the install cd directly with sp3 was not an option as there are no other windows computers in the house, nor will there likely ever be any.

This laptop has a broadcom-based 802.11b only mini-pci card in it. Now, obviously 802.11b cards are incapable of using any security beyond WEP. So, I used a spare router to configure a test network that only used WEP. My Linux and Mac systems can connect to this network just fine. The windows laptop, however, cannot.

The laptop will see the network, but when it tries to associate it will give an error about having limited functionality due to being unable to dhcp an address. Manually assigning an address does not work either- the system will say it is associated properly but will be unable to even ping the gateway. The wireless router WILL see the mac address of the laptop as a connected client.

I went so far as to swap the wireless card out for another known-good 802.11b/g card, and have the exact same issue; if the router has no security, the system can connect, but as soon as any is enabled, the system is unable to connect properly.

I have applied all service packs and let windows update run its course. It's been ages since I have messed with XP so I am not sure what may be wrong. Does anyone have any suggestions? I just need to get this working before I hand the system off to my friend (I just feel so tainted touching a windows box!)

recommendations for n router/improving wireless signal

hi,

i'm using verizon fios and their default actiontech MI424-WR router with only b/g capability. i am about 60 feet away from the router, separated by multiple walls and a floor level, and am receiving moderate to low wireless signal strength. i was thinking about getting an n router or repeater to boost my wireless connection.

my laptop is a macbook with a draft-n network card, and my household has laptops with windows vista, win xp, win 7, and OSX with both g and n wireless cards that use the wireless connection.

i'm looking for a router recommendation for my home that is compatible, doesn't drop signal, and has strong signal strength and range. my budget is around 100$ (flexible), though i'd prefer to spend less like 40-60$. looking through the black friday deals and researching reviews on amazon/newegg, i've read a lot of horror stories, and thought that i would ask this forum for advice on what router to buy or whether i should get a repeater or other solution.

thanks

I need help with a linksys router situation pleasee!

Ok, so here is my problem...

I have a WRT160Nv2 router, and earlier today my internet going to my PS3 wasn't working (wired), but everything else was. So, I powercycled my router and modem so the ps3 would work again. During the process though the ethernet cord for my pc must have fallen out. So i re-plugged all of the cords back in and powercycled both the modem and router again. The blue lights for both cords came on showing that they were connected, and the cord in the back of the pc had the 2 LED lights lit up next to it. The only problem was on the computer it says that the local area connection 3 has limited to no connectivity, and the network map in LELA shows a red line from the router to the modem. The internet is working fine on my PS3 and iPod though, so I tried to fix the connection through LELA, but that didn't work. I can't seem to find the solution online either.

So, if anyone can solve this or offer up some helpful advice so I can solve it that would be great. Thanks!

Cisco Aironet 1100 repeater not authenticating.

Hello all,

I am cutting my teeth on a couple of Cisco Aironet 1100 APs running IOS 12.3/8 and a MS IAS server. The current access point (AP1) has been up and running with the IAS server with no problems. I have been tasked to extend the coverage area by adding a repeater (AP2), another 1100 with the same IOS ver., to a location with no wired access.

The problem I could use some help with is showing up as this error on AP1;

"Station ####.####.#### Authentication failed" The MAC address is correct for AP2.

On AP2 the error message is:

"Packet to client ####.####.#### reached max retries, removing the client" The displayed MAC address is correct for AP1's radio interface.

What am I doing wrong? Any input would be greatly appreciated. My config for both devices is below:

Win 7 - Block access to nearby wireless networks

From the FWIW department...

There have been a few posts in the past looking for help blocking access to nearby wireless network primarily by parents trying to block childern from by passing their network restrictions. With Windows 7 netsh commands this is possible and easy to configure. I created a small web page that details the basic steps necessary including example screen shots. Note this will also apply to Vista.

http://theillustratednetwork.mvps.org/Netsh/Block_wireless_networks.html

As always constructive comments are appreciated...
